Students commit to a 12-week term of 3 hours per week, including 2 hours in person and 1 hour online.They take classes at Cary’s Greenwood Forest Baptist Church Fellowship Hall, which leases its building to the center’s use.
They practice reading, writing and speaking Chinese with an experienced native-speaking teacher.They also study cultural traditions such as festival celebrations, Chinese calligraphy and delicious food .
Shannon Hutchinson, of Raleigh, said she started learning Mandarin to “relieve stress.”She said she wanted to do something to mobilize her brain.
“It’s really relaxing and it’s different from other things I do, so it really gets my brain focused,” Hutchinson said.”Mandarin is completely different and I really want to learn something completely new.”
Hutchinson said she looks forward to classes every Saturday.She said she didn’t have a specific end goal in learning Chinese, just the simple pleasure of learning about different cultures.
The first semester ends with two adult classes, but it plans to offer summer workshops and classes in the fall.
