Feature: Chinese Bridge Language Competition Attracts Enthusiastic Egyptian Youth

Cairo, May 31. “The Chinese Bridge competition is a challenge for me to overcome my fear and learn one of the most difficult languages ​​in the world,” said Malak Ihab, an 18-year-old high school student .He won second place in the Chinese competition for Egyptian middle school students on Tuesday.
The teenage girl joined nine others in the 15th Chinese Bridge Language Competition hosted by the Chinese Embassy in Cairo, which was held at the Confucius Institute at Cairo University.
“I plan to complete the advanced course of the language course and find good job opportunities in the future,” said Ihab, who is currently studying at the China Friendship School in Egypt.
Nashwa Fahmy, the competition’s top prize winner and an avid reader, said: “Chinese language and culture have given me free-flying thoughts and painted a colorful picture of my life.”
She hopes the language can be learned by more people, not just schools and universities.
During the competition, Fahmy put on a wonderful performance by telling stories, playing traditional Chinese musical instruments and performing Chinese folk dances.
“I learned that difficult beginnings end with happy accomplishments,” she said proudly, holding her grand golden trophy.
“I’m very proud that my students won very good awards in the competition,” said Mowat Mohammed, director of the Egypt-China Friendship School.
Cultural events like this give students the confidence and resilience to continue learning a difficult language like Chinese, she said.
“China is very advanced in science and technology, and Egypt and China strengthen cultural exchanges to encourage students to learn the language,” said the Chinese teacher.
At the same time, Wang Shenggang, Education Minister Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Egypt, said, “The competition has become a bridge connecting the two countries, enhancing the understanding of the two peoples and making a positive contribution to enhancing the friendship between China and Egypt.”
The Chinese diplomat said that Egypt has four Confucius Institutes and more than 20 universities offer Chinese majors, and he hopes that students will have the opportunity to study and work in China.
Jamal Shazli, vice president of student affairs at Cairo University, emphasized that “cultural cooperation plays a very important role in the friendly relations between Egypt and China.”
He said language competitions at universities and secondary schools were “an opportunity for cultural exchange between our students and the Chinese”.
