Chengyu Story: Practice makes perfect

Today’s idiom 熟能生巧 (shú nénɡ shēnɡ qiǎo) tells us that skills come by exercise; practice makes perfect or with familiarity you will learn the trick.

In the Northern Song Dynasty, a man named Chen Yaozi was very good at archery. At that time, everyone knew that he was a good archer, so everyone admired him very much. After being praised by everyone, Chen Yaozi felt that his ability was unparalleled in the world, so he became complacent. One day, Chen Yaozi performed his unique skills in the shooting range. One shot broke the thin, soft wicker. The audience cheered loudly and asked him to do it again.

At this time, an old man selling oil happened to pass by. After seeing it, he said with a smile, “ha ha, what’s the big deal? It’s just a matter of skill. ” When Chen Yaozi heard this, he couldn’t help but reply angrily: “What are your abilities as an old man? How dare you despise me?” The old man replied, “how dare I despise you? I just know from decades of experience in cooking oil that when I want to do something, I’ll find the way to do it.” Said, he took a gourd from his bag, put a square hole copper coin on the mouth of the gourd, took a spoon of oil, and lift the oil spoon to pour into the gourd. The fallen oil is straight like a line, passing through the money hole and entering the gourd. After the oil is poured out, he took the coin and showed it to everyone. There is no oil stain around the money hole. Everyone was amazed at it. The old man smiled and said to Chen Yaozi, “I’m not so great, just skillful.” Hearing this, Chen Yaozi turned away without a word.
